greeings all

as the subject line suggests i am getting ready to build/repair
home build'd cd' and dvd's .. i've got a pair of machines about
pentium pro 200 mhz with 128 mb dram scsi cdrom/4gb scsiII hdd.
i can add another scsi 4 gb drive into both machines and one of
teh machines has a 20gb pluss soon a 120 gb ide drive this
machine has a dvd (sony) cd/dvd/ writer, the network that
connects these machines is 100 mhz switch based connectivity

essentially i am looking to us host a as teh source "drive" and
host b as teh "target drive" as neither machine has enough
resources to do this by it self .. i can plug in a 4 gb raw
scsi tape drive into wither machine if that would work as a
transfere mechanism rather than use teh network .. like make
image of to be copied image then cut it to tape (as i did
several decades ago at statebank on a top of teh charts
philips/jvc cd mastering system.. 20 watercooled cd drives it
wa quiet tooo.

ues the network and interface speed related issues like dropouts
even with scsi based hardware (not fast enoutg, insufficient buss
throughput ??) .. upgrading from 100 mhz to 1000 mhz network
operating might be acomplished if its as simple as using a cat
6 crossover cable for a pair gige cards ? is 100 mhz a fast
enough network backbone to us as a mechanisom for building a
virtual cd/dvd cutting machine

i know using scsi based tape is doable just a bit fidly with 4
gb tapes .. i'm getting a dlt-7000 organised but it is not
likely to be ready fora while yet .. sadly.

ideas thougys pointers software sugestions apreciated .. all
this stuff is old but new and a bit complicated

one more question .. dvd-r/cd-r (thats all teh local shop had)
these are write once media ? does it need formating before
usage . are dvd-rw/cd-rw significanly more expensive,
availability ?? are teh -r -rw media different in any other
ways ?? finally whats teh real difference between dvd-rw and
dvd+rw (cd-r cd+rw) which type should be used 'at home' ?

apologies length/typing hands/brain cold and bit stiff .. sort
off.

much kind regards and appreciations gracious thanks

jonathan
