All current macs have intel CPUs in them and seem to work fine. The  
only 17" laptop though is the MacBook Pro - http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/ 
  -  and it does 1680 x 1050 or 1920x1200 depending on the model.  
Depending on what use you plan to put it to you might want to just  
look at using an external display when you need more pixels.

I think it probably comes down to choice of OS in the end. If you want  
to run OSX you need to get an Apple and the choices are simpler. If  
you don't then you have a whole range of choices, including an Apple.

Personally, I have a MacBook, run OSX and am quite happy (well with my  
choice of laptop at any rate ;-).
