This is a topic near to my heart. Particularly in the last 6 to 9
months I've spent a lot of time with digital photography. For
background going back over 40 years, take a look at

To answer your immediate questions: I'm currently using an Olympus
E-510 SLR and a Nikon "CoolPix" L1 point and shoot for the few
occasions when I don't have the Olympus with me.
I chose the Olympus for a number of features:
- "live view"--view through the monitor before you take the photo.
Most SLRs still require the viewfinder, and if you're used to a
Spotmatic, you'll note that not everything has got better in the
last 40 years. I also have (thanks to my daughter) a buggered Canon
EOS 20D, and on both cameras the viewfinders are darker and smaller
than the Pentax, and manual focusing is pretty much hit and miss
without microprism or even split image help.
- Image stabilizer.
- Ultrasonic sensor cleaner. Digital sensors are particularly
susceptible to dust.
It turns out that the "live view" is of limited utility: once you turn
it on, the mirror pops up and the autofocus cuts out.
I'll talk about how I process them while answering another message in
this thread.
