greetings,

as teh subject says .. my poor little desktop (gnome/x11) noe
spits out 'tmof' whenever i type anytingh on teh commandline,
in responce to teh return key ... grr

also, it complains about not being able to find several
libraries something.1 and someotherthing.6 and another.gz.?

i've looked in teh hand book it essentially said read man tuning(7)
so i looked on altavista.com (for all you google fans/sheep
(mild grin)) which gave me reams of aix/linux/some solaris ohhh
and the obligatory 3/4/5 adverts on teh top of every page.

please, this is not a whinge, just a statement of teh facts i
got when i tried to look for some detail .. please note i did
include freebsd in teh search critera and got not more than 2
freebsd specific entries in teh first 4/5 pages i viewed. alta
vista has a default of ten items per page (maximises teh ad
revenu/annoyance factor i guess) i changed this to 50 and teh
freebsd count didn't change in teh forst 4 search page results
(that be some 200 items, good result i think .. not, perhaps ??

ok, moving on ...

i compared my desktop after i killed off enough windows to get
some kind of a responce, to teh free running freebsd v6.2-r
(the smae instlaa cdrom set for all my 6,2 instlaas) i asked
sysctl -a to give me a look at how the two machines compared, a
real eye opener .. my desktop is running about 4 to 8 times the
level of maxfiles .. max everything that teh 486 gateway
levels.

is ther a simple sysctl thingie that i could change to make teh
desktop more workable, altering teh hardware is not an option,
without throwing it out and replacing it .. given that i don't
have a replacement, thats not an option either.

just a few examples

kern.maxvnodes: 3994 17192
kern.maxproc: 532 1956
kern.maxfiles: 1064 3912
kern.maxfilesperproc: 957 3520
kern.maxprocperuid: 478 1760
kern.ipc.maxpipekva:	1257472 4149248
kern.ipc.pipes: 24 228
kern.ipc.pipekva: 524288	1789952

and so it goes on .. only the numbers get bigger

back in my day (v2.2.7-r) tuning was an educated guess and if
it worked great, if not guess again, also it was one item to
change .. would i have to change all these, and teh others
further down the list ? what would be a reasonable percentage
increase on based on teh current values, say 100 percent
increas, 200, 300 ?? what is concidered reasonable on a
x11/gnome/kde environment these days .. please ?

thats all fro me for now, thanks for listening.

much kind regards

jonathan
