As far as I'm concerned G5s don't really exist..

But we are talking about vectorization here, which is not something  
you are you going to find in your average desktop application.. I mean  
sure it all depends on what you're doing, but for many applications  
the raw speed of the G5 is going to out perform the G4..

I'v also seen SSE3 perform close to Altivec, although the CPUs with  
SSE3 were faster, it does seem intel are getting closer with it..
