the motherboard in the (original) machine was 'spiked' by a poorly fitting
plugboard connector, i saw/heard teh flash as i pluged in teh power cable and
after that teh machine would do ever stranger things every time i tried to
reboot until it fianlly failed completely .. i was given this gigabyte
mohterboard by a friend, along came a realtek 10/100 nic, the nVIDIA graphics
card and teh soundblaster audio card oh and 3x256 mb dimms

my original question was will this mothewrboard/graphics & sound card work with
freebsd ??

well the short answer is NO .. it gets to teh one step before before actually
starting teh machine .. it loads teh image from whereever and into teh md0
device and that is the last thing that is seen on teh screen .. it locks hard,
really hard, so much so that the only way to get control is to pull teh power
plug.
after trying a few more times i kept getting the same result .. lockup !!
there is one 'bright' spark, when i tried to restart and used teh 'safe'
(option 3), when i tried this it continues on to boot and starts up teh
sysinstall thingie.
then it goes on to do teh installation, it asks if i wanted to disable acpi, i
said yes and completed the installation .. it now boots 'normally', well as i
have seen freebsd start up over the last decade or so ..
could some-body explain for me in simple terms what this acpi (sorry if thats
teh wrong way around) thing is about .. i've tried to follow teh development of
freebsd but i just cannot manage to understand teh language its like rain
falling on teh roof.... just when i think i've got a handle on teh rhyme, the
rhythm it all gets changed and i have to start again, it gets so frustrating
some times, so very frustrating !
without reolacing the motherboard is there anything that i can do to make this
combination run 'properly' with freebsd, thats my preference, it seems to boot
without trouble on most of teh linux cds i have laying around.
it boots proprly with freesbie v1.1 (built on freebsd v5.3-release)
much kind regards, appreciations
jonathan
