it was to do with "emulating" (if thats teh right word ? ) of
teh teletype output device (i.e. the printinger 'screen') with
its then new device teh 'glass teletype' i.e teh monitor, also
called teh paperless printer in some circles.

what tehy were doing was converting teh way the computer put
characters  on teh teletype over to teh way teh printer would
display the output with a glass teletype attached in teh plase
of a printer-teletype come paperless printer.
