Really?  I thought that OS-9 was more or less a Unix clone.

Certainly Mac-OS versions before X all used CR.

To be fair to Windows, many other systems before then also used both,  
and both (actually explicitly CR,LF -- I'm not sure that anything uses  
LF,CR) is the end-of-line marker in most line-oriented internet  
protocols, like SMTP and Telnet.

These days, any well-written program will happily tolerate any of the  
conventions automatically.  Python does by default.
