You didn't mention what version of FreeBSD you have but at least in 6.2,
GENERIC does not include atapicam so you don't have the SCSI emulation
for ATAPI devices and therefore cdrecord won't work.

Once you have atapicam, you should also get something like:
cd0 at ata1 bus 0 target 0 lun 0
cd0: <TSSTcorp; CD/DVDW TS-L532M; HR08> Removable CD-ROM SCSI-0 device
cd0: 16.000MB/s transfers
burncd can be problematic but you don't mention what error message you got.
