}the very basic thing - checking permissions on /tmp ! yeah it's set to 
}755 somehow, but I'm sure I didn't set this up.. that's the problem and

Haha - that was so obvious I didn't suggest it initially. ;-)

I was more concerned as to why your /tmp would have changed permissions
like that. I imagine a great many things might not like /tmp to be
unwritable.
