[BUGS] sendmail modifying incoming (possibly outgoing) mail

greetings all (sendmail 'specialists' perhaps)

i have been sending mail to freebsd.org (postmaster) as part of
teh spam cleaning project for a few years now ..

i gather teh spam that comes here from the freebsd mailinglists
that i am subscribed to .. i aggreate them into a single file
by using mutt (see attached for details) for those who will cry
upgrade .. i have tried this on newer versions (at least up to
v6.2 and whatever freebsd.org is running as its mail handling
subsystem).

now ...

i save teh mail items using mutt into a file tmp/saved-mail i
check the file to make sure that teh file has no additional chr
i.e. making sure that the "From " lines in teh headers part of
teh spam has not been altered .. it is clean BUT on receipt of
teh prepared post along with its attached file..

in teh attached file every single "From " has been altered to
">From " as i said i have checked the file and before sending
the "From" lines are clean but upon receipt (here and at
freebsd org) these lines are noe sporting an additional chr in
teh form of ">From " this extra ">" confuses spamassasin.

i am not sure if upgrading my software will solve this
issue/problem, at any rate the hardware in question will not
run freebsd v6.2/7. onwards, wont install because of base
changes alianating my kind of hardware so upgrading is ont an
option in for the immeadiate future .. failing this ..

is it possible to fiddle with my frebsd to make sure that it is
not my end making this happen and thus .. well thats another
story.

i suppose i could 'upgrade' to another more recent bsd but that
is a bit self defeating i think but nonthe less an option if i
have got concrete proof that it is my end that is doing thins
thing and cauing the problem .. it is just extra work on teh
recieving ends process that need not be done and would be nice
if it didnot have to be done (it is done by hand, as far as i
can tell).

ok now for teh real kicker, sometimes these specific mail go
through unchanged i.e teh "From " are not converted to ">From "
at this point i cannot point to any thing that i am doing to
make this happen .. as i am doing nothing to change my
(relevent) config files, how i run sendmail anything else .
about the only oddity is last time this > chr disapeared i had
tried to shift my freebsd mail archive from one directory into
another subdiorectory and mutt complained about not being able
to "lock dot clock save file y/n)" i told it to yes, save teh
filed the file and continued ... but this is is not at all
consistant as regards this ">" chr

anybody got an/any idea(s) .. i've gone through the bat book
several times and even tried http://www.altavista.com without
much success.

much appreciations/kind regards

jonathan
