there are two .. that would fill this bill sadly one has gone commercial and
because of market forces was dumped by teh big fish the purchased teh company
that once build'd and sold os9 it is so much smaller and more rliable that any
off teh bsd its not funny.

but if you want all teh benefits that freebsd provided and none of teh overhead
then is not possible to get past qnx . all teh familiar stuff names kits and
x11 if you want in less space than the freebsd kernel space .. oops thats too
much, less than a 1m4 diskette it is possible to build a wrking structure on a
   720k diskette.

as for reliability .. it depends on what you mean by reliability qnx is about
teh most stable unix a like system available but it dose break down as do all
systems eventuall but if youwant to build critical care patention drug
administration systems heart monitoering systems .. and at teh other end of teh
system you name it industrial computing managing big business production lines
   etc all done on qnx.

so for a a couple of routers doing simple jobs no worries .. grin.

now that it has gone, er embrased open source, qnx is now afordible by even teh
like of me .. smile. sadly they have embrased linux as thier oss partners but
thats not a real issue i guee qnx the underlying system will make any realtime
linux .. oops i'm preaching sorry.

if you can find os9 give it a try, used to run on motorola stuff really good
last i heard thier was an intel version too.

but for my money qnx .. all teh support, all teh reliability, all teh
everything freebsd, anybsd claims and more .. with a 30 year track record of
support and reliability on a berkeley unix base with sys V add on's so bsd
   users it a cake walk...

i've been building small systems (386/486 with 4 to 8 mb dram and a floppy
diskdrive) for some 30 years now and still qnx marches on . i guess if i can do
then most anyone can make it work.

   much kind regards

   jonathan
