In the past I'v had the MUA doing this, but the two major reasons for  
having the MTA do it are firstly what Edwin already stated above and  
secondly as you mentioned, reliability. I'v found that with outlook  
especially, it simply isn't at all reliable. It will actually fail  
silently and then never attempt to perform the action again! At first  
I thought users had been messing with it, but it's actually the  
software, it's hopeless..

And I neglected to mention that the users mailbox has an ACL set on it  
that only allows them to list, read and add mail, they cannot delete  
it from the server..
