VLANs and IOS... That is the greatest drama I have ever seen.

IOS is based on the concept of interfaces: Every interface has its
own IP subnet. The whole configuration of the router is based on
it. And then they get something like VLANs in which an interface
isn't linked to an IP subnet anymore. And then it gets messy.....

Riverstone and Extreme Networks have resolved this beautiful by
separating interfaces and subnets. You create a VLAN, you add an
IP address to it, you might want to add a VLAN tag to it if you are
brave. Then you add ports, tagged or untagged, to it. That makes
sense. That worse fine. That gives you a configuration from which
you can see if it works.

Cisco IOS has a horrible scar on its body because of this history.
