Might have already been said: use sysutils/screen to run it under.
Is NAT involved? Blame your NAT gateway to timeout too early.
Try fiddling with net.inet.tcp.keepidle (default 2H).
If you have a Juniper netsecure gateway, set that to disable firewall
checks for SSH.
