i had similar problem a while ago

in my case it was the tsch shell getting fussy about no input
and timing out taking every thing with it, i did not look any
further than that in my looking for reasons .. your milage may
vary ... probably it will.

i was trying to build a kernel on a 386, i then moved to a much
faster machine a 486dx50 *real 50 mhz motherboard i borrowed
from a friend eventually i had that problem on that machine as
well ... grr graphics enabled interface, et al.

hope this sheds some light .. hope yor new year brings/delivers
much promice
