Yep, CR,LF harkens back to the days of paper out-put.. Since the print  
head needed to 'carriage return' to the start of the line, then 'line  
feed' the paper to the next line..

Hence
             the
                   staircase
                                   effect
                                             you get when printing  
with just LF..
