Last time I was working with a large number of machines they largely had 
Intel chipsets (fxp) and would fail to auto-negotiate with Cisco switches 
most(all?)  of the time. This was with 100Mb only. I don't know if the 
fault lay with the chipset, the switch or if the whole auto-negotiation 
thing is just flawed - I just manually set everything to full-duplex.
