Sendmail is an MTA, not a mailbox store. If you want to set up a mailbox
server, you still need an MTA like Sendmail to take delivery of incoming
mail.

I have been using Dovecot (FreeBSD ports: mail/dovecot) as a mailbox
server on a couple of different FreeBSD servers for the past year and it
hasn't bitten me yet. In my setup, Dovecot's MDA (Dovecot deliver) takes
the incoming mail from Sendmail and stores it in Maildir directories.
Dovecot gives you the options of one or all of IMAP/POP3/IMAPS/POP3S for
  user connection to their mailboxes.

On those mailbox servers, I also run SquirrelMail (FreeBSD port:
mail/squirrelmail) as a web mail interface for users. SquirrelMail will
talk directly to Maildir mailboxes or access them via an IMAP server. I
have it doing the latter.

I haven't used any other mailbox server or webmail server software. I
did spend a while trying to configure a couple of others but found the
above suited me best. A significant factor in my case was that I had
invested a lot of time in Sendmail customization (particularly to do
with spam filtering) and wanted to retain Sendmail as my MTA.

Hope this helps.
